Stewardship Builds Essential Character Traits We recognize Him as the source of every good thing (James 1:17).īecause of that, it only makes sense to act responsibly, seeking out the proper use of His blessings. We should lovingly care for His creation out of love for God Himself. As Christians, we love God and cherish the gifts He has given us. God loves us, so He has blessed us with time, talent, money, property, and life. He gave our first parents the job of caring for His creation.

So even in a perfect world, God blessed Adam and Eve with important stewardship responsibilities. We can reinforce our understanding of this delegation when we compare different Bible translations, describing their gardening responsibility as to “work it and watch over it” (CSB), to “cultivate it” (NASB), or to “tend it and keep it” (NKJV). We learn a bit more about this responsibility in Genesis 2:15, which refers to Adam and Eve being placed in the Garden of Eden to manage it. That’s no small delegation-what an honor! God created humanity in His image, which included “ruling over” most of what He created for them! “Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth” (Genesis 1:26, NASB). Just before creating the first human beings, God planned for them to be stewards of the world He just made. 8:1-15 9:7.) Humanity as Stewards From the Beginning Stewards rejoice in the blessings that come to others as a result of their faithfulness.

Stewardship is a privilege given to us by God for nurture in love and the victory over selfishness and covetousness. We acknowledge God’s ownership by faithful service to Him and our fellow human beings, and by returning tithe and giving offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the support and growth of His church. We are responsible to Him for their proper use. We are God’s stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities, abilities and possessions, and the blessings of the earth and its resources.
